Big data is a generic term for any large and complex data that becomes difficult to process using traditional database management tools or traditional data processing applications. The typical properties of big data cover volume (huge, very large volume running into terrabytes & exabytes), velocity (exponential pace of growth), variety (coming from varied & multiple sources), variability (multiple formats; structured / unstructured), complexity (complicated connects, relationships, hierarchies). The challenges include capture, transformation, storage, search, sharing, transfer, visualization & analysis.

Big data is difficult to work with using most relational database management systems and desktop statistics and visualization packages, requiring instead "massively parallel software running on tens, hundreds, or even thousands of servers. At maexadata, Hadoop, an open-source framework for software & storage is used for large-scale processing of massive data-sets on clusters of commodity hardware.

For the end-user(s), though the technology used is immaterial. What the end-user(s) is really interested is in, is a SMART solution (Scalable, Maintainable, Accurate, Robust & Timely) to process their BIG DATA. The results got from processing the Big Data can be used directly or may even be used as inputs to traditional RDBMS or BI / DW applications.
